our approach

How we make documentaries.

A documentary studio's beliefs, process, and practice — written for the people who hire us to tell stories that matter.

We make documentaries for the greater good.

Where we started.

Devotive began as a studio that did everything — global brand campaigns, TV commercials, fashion, real estate, music videos. We were good at it, and the work paid the bills. But we found our calling and our voice when we began concentrating on documentaries for the people and causes that change lives.

Why we make this work.

We are all bombarded by the 24-hour negativity cycle. What we rarely see are the heroes — the people who notice a problem and dedicate themselves to solving it. They come from every corner of the world. They are every kind of person. They are usually not getting rich from their work, and they do it anyway, out of a sense of responsibility to others.

These are my heroes. I get to make them feel seen, heard, and appreciated. I get to amplify their work to a wider world, hopefully inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

What we believe.

We put story over profits. We use every resource at our disposal and cut no corners to deliver the truest version of the work. We are devotees to the truth — that is what makes us Devotive.

The why is king. We take care of the how.

What we believe about documentary.

In a world that is increasingly synthetic, we create in the space algorithms can't reach: reality. Real people, real stories, told in ways that move emotions and inspire change.

We will leverage any storytelling tool to amplify a narrative, with truth and authenticity always at its core.

We aren't preachers. We are storytellers. We take on complicated and culturally nuanced subjects and make them accessible and emotionally relevant to audiences.

We want our films to go far and wide. To help move mountains.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. For us, they are access to people's hearts and minds — and that is the seed of change.

What we say yes to.

We make documentaries about stories that matter.

Stories that help society, help the world, and tip the balance toward something better.

We work with organizations of every size — nonprofits, unions, ad agencies, foundations, and the brands serious enough to do real work for real causes. What we look for in a partner is the same thing every time: a story worth telling well.

While we have experience in brand campaigns, we have chosen to concentrate on our passion and vocation — devoting ourselves to our . We want to be the spark that lights the fire of change.

How we work.

Discovery.

While some might say "fix it in post," we say "fix it in pre." A robust pre-production process is how we deliver maximum value and impact.

Discovery starts with the questions that matter:

  • Who is the audience?
  • What do you want them to feel?
  • Why should they care?
  • What's the call to action?
  • Why does this story matter?

From there we identify milestones and stakeholders, set expectations, and establish clear communication channels.

Pre-Production.

Once we know what we want to say, we determine how to say it — within the resources you actually have.

We believe in honest, clear communication about available resources and expected outcomes. The budget shapes the plan. The plan shapes the shoot. We don't sell you a film we can't deliver. We maximize the value to deliver the biggest impact within the given constraints.

A successful pre-production looks like this: every stakeholder, every key crew member, every detail aligned before the cameras roll. Not just agreement. True alignment.

A project is going to go well when there's a solid plan, a solid backup plan, and little ambiguity. That's what we build for.

Production.

We've filmed in every U.S. state, on military bases, and in places as far-flung as — north of the Arctic Circle. Our network of filmmakers and producers lets us deploy multiple teams across the country simultaneously when projects demand scale, and stay nimble with one- or two-person crews when intimacy demands restraint.

Our subjects are our partners. The vibes we set on a shoot day directly shape the final film — a comfortable subject in a trusting room produces better interviews and deeper access than any amount of gear can buy. We work with the smallest crews possible because most subjects are more relaxed with fewer people in the room. We're open about what we don't know. We ask the questions that let our subjects feel respected. Many of them become lifelong partners and friends.

What we live for are the raw moments. The laughs, the tears, the baring of the soul that suck the air out of the room. That's our gold. Once we capture those, the rest is craft — the right framing, the right pacing, getting the audience to feel what our subjects are speaking on.

Of course they say if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. When things shift on us, we like to remember Bruce Lee:

"Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."

We deploy cinema-quality cameras — minimum 4K, often 6 to 8K, up to 12K when the work calls for it — because our films screen in cinemas and large-format projections, and we deliver to that standard.

In-house we run VFX, audio production and mixing, and a Part 107-licensed and insured drone fleet that includes acrobatic drones. We've standardized our aesthetic across teams through clear communication and shared technology, so a Devotive shoot in Alaska looks and feels like a Devotive shoot in Florida.

We respect the constraints our subjects give us. We don't push people where they don't want to go. We don't film what we're told not to film. There are always elegant ways to tell a story without infringing on the people in it.

A shoot day with us starts with a buffer — time to settle, time to put our subject at ease. We have a plan, and we work the plan. But we don't cram every minute. We let the day breathe so our subjects don't drain and our crews stay sharp. We typically don't overshoot. What we do capture is the magic of the day.

Post-Production.

We've been telling visual stories for over three decades, and in our medium, films live or die in the editing room. Our multicultural team — from Europe, Latin America, and Japan — brings the diverse perspective and empathy to make a film land for the audience it's meant for.

The viewing experience is a contract with the audience. Every frame matters. Every cut and every clip has to advance the story, or it doesn't belong. Their time is sacred, and once you earn that trust, they'll come with you on the ride.

We started our careers in post-production, which is why we always prioritize the story. You can get away with an imperfect shot in the era of phone-shot reality. You cannot get away with bad audio. Nothing disconnects an audience faster.

We finish everything in-house — edit, color, sound design, music, VFX, animation, captioning. Every film we deliver can ship ADA-compliant with full captions and, when needed, translated across multiple languages.

Trust through preparation. Our best client relationships are built through pre-production rigor. By the time we deliver a rough cut, it's polished enough it could ship — but we know it's only the beginning. When clients see our work, the notes are small and nuanced — because the trust is there.

In-house finishing. Editing, sound finishing, music composition, sound cleanup, color correction, color finishing, VFX, animation, rotoscoping, captioning — all in-house. This avoids miscommunications and escalating costs from third-party finishing partners.

Sound is more than half the film. A perfect picture with bad audio is unwatchable. We pair the right moment with the right track, the right swell with the right beat. When it works, it's bliss on a screen.

Multilingual fluency. Our team is fluent in English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. We have partners worldwide to deliver in any language. Captions, translations, dubbing — handled.

The QA standard. We don't ship something that was made quickly. We spend an agonizing amount of time on the smallest details — every name, every spelling, every frame — through a dedicated quality assurance process before any video leaves our hands.

If your work matters,

we'd like to hear about it.
